Crysis

"Maximum Game"

Crysis is an open-ended FPS game that takes place in August 2020 on a set of islands in the South China Sea. Similar to Doom 3 and our A400 Ultra purchase, the Crytek game forced users around the world to dig deep and spend big on new systems capable of running the game. Crytek ensured that the game would grant a rendering challenge to future video cards. Hence, the scalability of Crysis makes it an excellent benchmarking tool. We use the "Very High" settings for both XP and Vista. Reference this article for an explanation of our modified test settings under DX9.

A video of the approximate Crysis game play experience during DX9 and DX10 testing is below. Feel free to follow the line graphs over the 300-second time span while the video is playing, or reference the MIN/MAX/AVG chart for summary FPS data. Audio quality is not a priority, and we recommend turning down the volume.

Author's Note

When we tried to perform a test run under 1600x1200 and DX10, the game was completely unplayable. Playing with fewer than 10FPS proved difficult to reproduce our standard test run. Therefore, the 1600x1200 test run under DX10 is not comparable to the sample video.
A higher video quality streaming version is available here and our torrent distribution has the full quality video.

Crysis gives the WinFast PX8800GT a thorough beating. Under DX9, the only playable resolutions are 800x600 at 37FPS and 1024x768 at 29FPS. Rendering with DX10 decreases performance dramatically and 800x600 is the only playable option at 26FPS. Sacrifices, involving detail levels, are needed to run higher resolutions. For instance, at 1600x1200 under DX10, the frame rate drops as low as 4FPS and averages 9FPS.

Finding the happy medium between playability, resolution, and detail is difficult because of Crysis's robust CryENGINE2. However, the increase in performance the Leadtek PX8800GT enables playability at the highest detail level. The limited 512MB of video ram restricts the maximum playable resolution to 1024x768. We enable 2x Anti-Aliasing to soften the compromise between resolution and detail during regular gaming. The overall performance in Crysis is impressive for a 229USD 194USD price tag. This card truly gives the mid-range market access to acceptable Crysis gaming.
