mtronthumb.jpgMtron, which was founded in 2005, has developed a new 1.8" PATA Solid State Drive. Mtron partnered with Imation for their MOBI series SSDs earlier this year. The two companies hope to compete in the growing market with their complimentary expertise. Mtron provides the technology, and Imation globalizes it through marketing. Some say they have a chance of catching the big guys with their pants down, because MOBI drives have arguably faster access speeds.

One of the new SSDs is Single Level Cell Flash memory. The drive supports the PATA (ZIF) interface in a 1.8" form factor. The maximum read speed is 120MB/s, and the maximum write speed is 100MB/s. The usual benefits of significant power reductions and pure resilience are present in the SSD, but Mtron did not go into detail.

mtron_mlc_128gbthumb.jpg The Multi Level Cell Flash memory versions have the maximum storage, but the performance is not as robust. Mtron's new 128Gb MLC drive operates at a maximum read speed of 110MB/s and a maximum write speed of 40MB/s. The write speeds are not as fast as the 1.8" SSD announced by Samsung last month, but read speeds favor Mtron. Samsung's 1.8" MLC 128GB SSD will write at 70 MB/s and read at 100MB/s. Toshiba (AKA SanDisk) has 128GB 1.8" SSDs coming into production May, 2008. They mirror the same specs as Mtron's SSD. A-DATA also has a 128GB offering, but it is in a 2.5" form factor.

Mtron starts production for these new 1.8" SSDs in April of this year. However, there is no mention of a MSRP yet. If their other drives are any indication, it will be pricey. Imation's current 2.5" 32GB model runs around 1200USD. Their 64GB model sits close to 2000USD. Enterprise markets might be willing to pay those prices, but we do not see the average consumer spending 1500-2000 USD on SSD storage. However, these new drives may not fit into normal cost brackets because Mtron is implementing their own technology. The company says that they reduced the cost of manufacturing by a large margin. We hope that this will translate into lower costs.

On a lighter note, SSD pricing has decreased by 50% year on year in the past, the technology might be in a position to compete with the current standards by the end of this year. The extra competition from Mtron should help lower prices in the market as well. We will update the specifications when they are solidified.

"...Mtron has previously launched 2.5 Inch 32GB SSD and Multi Level Cell (MLC) SSD in 2007, and Mtron believes that the addition of the new product will help them to take the next step in mobile SSD market..."

"...Steve Jeon, CEO of Mtron, said, "With our new 1.8 Inch SSD, Mtron has added another great product line as a leader in SSD market, which is expected to grow into ten billion dollars in 2012. Our new product is a result of careful market analysis and research for consumer needs, and we will launch our new product in April so that we can satisfy their need for high performance SSD products..."
