Dailymail.co.uk has published an interesting article written by Stephen Hawking on the practicality of time travel. He covers wormholes and approaching the speed of light as methods of time travel. He also covers current evidence that the passage of time is not constant, but varies based on conditions such as gravity (GPS satellite time loss) or velocity (LHC time dilation) He then expands on this proof into possible and impossible ways for humanity to travel through time.
In addition, Hawking delves into the paradoxes associated with time travel. A good example of one of those paradoxes is the scientist that makes a portal that goes a minute back in time. If the scientist made the portal in order to shoot himself, what would happen, how could it happen? According to Hawking, this situation couldn’t occur because there are inherent protections against these occurrences. He theorizes that portal or wormhole time travel is probably impossible due to natural feedback loops similar to sound feedback that occurs at concerts. Instead of sound, the portal amplifies and loops radiation that becomes so intense that the portal destroys itself.
Our path to time travel is not one of instantaneous time travel. We can only use variations in the way time passes to accelerate our passage into the future with a fractional aging cost. This type of time travel would enable humanity to travel great distances. Looks like the old adage that “you can’t change the past” holds true. The good news is that time travel is not bound to science fiction anymore. Humanity needs only to wait for our technology to catch up to our theory. This Lengthy article is a recommended read for anyone interested in the subject.
