Samsung Electronics America has unveiled a
new series of 24" and 25.5" displays in a press release. Samsung
intends for the models to the cover all consumer and commercial
related tasks. The 24" model is called the SyncMaster
2493HM , and the 25.5" flavor is called the SyncMaster
2693HM.
It looks like Samsung has put some effort into these models. Both pack full 1080P resolution capability along with HDMI, d-sub, and DVI inputs. As many monitors companies have done in the past, they included a set of multimedia speakers. However, integrated sound sources are usually lacking, but are beneficial for office applications. There will be two 2-watt speakers in each monitor.
The versatility of these monitors looks to be impressive as well. Samsung has included the ability for height, tilt, pivot, and swivel adjustments. They hope that these features will allow for a customizable display setup. Both the 24" and 25.5" models sport a 160-degree viewing angle. These customizations are useful in every day computing.
Samsung claims a 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (1000:1) for the 2493HM and a 3000:1 DCR (1000:1) for the 2693HM. Both models have a 5ms grey-to-grey (GTG) response time. However, these numbers are only comparable to monitors of the same brand. Each company has different ways of computing their own measurements. Both display models support a native resolution of 1920x1200 and can back it up with 400 cd/m2 of backlight. In addition, both monitors come with a three-year warranty on all parts; including the backlight.
It appears that Samsung has finally realized that people use their computers for everything these days. The product manager of the display group at SEA stated:
"Consumers are increasingly turning to computer monitors as an entertainment and multimedia solution, both in the office and in the living room..."
This mindset is seen in the design of these monitors and they will hopefully live up to the descriptions of Samsung.
Currently, the 2493HM monitor is available at an MSRP of $599. The 2693HM goes for $699. Despite the press release stating availability, we could not find any for sale at the time of writing, but we will keep you updated. The Official Press Release from Samsung is available here.
