The power of the personal computer has afforded the individual a Swiss army knife of expression. This can be seen in the boom of user-generated content sites such as YouTube, Digg, stumble upon, and many others. Projects that used to take thousands of extras now need as little as three guys. Musical expression is no different.

With the advent of new distribution models, such as bit torrent, any information propagates across the globe in a matter of minutes. Bit-torrent alone calls into question the validity of record companies, broadcasters, and movie studios alike. This is something Mark Pesce talked about years ago. He forecasted the rise of a new business model where advertisers and content producers were directly connected. Once the consumer has deemed a service useless, it is hard to regain that confidence.
The individual has the full power to produce, create, and distribute any work of art they create. Bands such as Radiohead seized this opportunity last year when they offered their album "In Rainbows" for download (no longer available) a few months before its official release in December. Radiohead directly made over 3 million euros or 4.5 million USD. Considering they offered it at no cost, and their record company opposed the idea, they performed well.
Reflecting the growing disdain for RIAA members, a group of people presented a challenge to the Portsmouth, N.H. area to produce an album in one month. The album had to contain ten songs or thirty-five minutes of material. The material had to be written and recorded in the month of February. The challenge was dubbed "Record Production Month". This was to foster creativity from individuals and prove that a record label is not the gatekeeper to producing a CD. They had a 165 groups submit CDs for RPM 06.
