9600GT Delays Confirmed

Rumors stating NVIDIA's woes with their 9600GT are confirmed. In a memo, NVIDIA talks about why the release date was pushed back to February 21, 2008. It looks like both companies had some hiccups relating to their new product releases. Let us hope ATi has their driver issue solved as well.

"NVIDIA found a small percentage of GeForce 9600 GT boards exhibiting a voltage transient on the NVDD power supply during certain applications. They have reason to believe that this may cause a system hang under certain conditions. In order to provide the most robust and reliable solution possible to NVIDIA's customers they have decided to hold shipments in order to make some minor modifications to reduce the transients.

NVIDIA's engineering team has identified the necessary modifications and they are in the process of verification. I will communicate the exact modifications to you as soon as they have been verified and we will communicate the new shipping schedule in the next few days.

Since we are now running into the Chinese New Year holiday NVIDIA have decided to move the launch date out a week in order to ensure that our partners have enough time to get product on shelves at the time of launch.

Official Release of the HD3870X2

Maintaining the intended schedule, AMD released information today on the ATi Radeon HD 3870X2. The press release states an immediate availability of the possible NVIDIA contender. Rick Bergman, who is senior vice president and general manager of the Graphics Product Group at AMD, stated:

"PC gaming enthusiasts demand the ultimate in performance and scalability for their HD gaming experience and the ATI Radeon 3870 X2 sets the standard by which all should be compared in this segment..." he added "With this launch we reaffirm our commitment to enthusiast performance leadership and send a clear message that the ATI Radeon 3870 X2 is the new gold standard of the PC gaming world."

Newegg.com has the ATi Radeon HD 3870X2 available at the expected retail cost of 449USD. They have five brands available with four of them in stock now. The cheapest 8800 Ultra at this time is 629USD, with most sitting closer to 700USD. NVIDIA should react fast, if they hope to compete. The good news is this should drive down the prices of all video cards. Most other retail sites have the card's value set at around 500USD, or they did not carry the card. Newegg has the cheapest price so far, which is MSRP.

Diamond has a lower core clock of 775MHz and there are two versions available: 1024MB and 512MB. Sapphire also shows this slower clock rate in their version. The HIS and ASUS versions look to be standard reference design and run at 825MHz. The VisionTek brand is not in stock. Most of the branded websites lack any information on the cards, but this is normal for a release day.

ASUS has an upgraded version available that is labeled the 3DHTI (vs. HTDI) and utilizes two RV670XT GPUs, .8ns memory (vs. 1ns), and two extra DVI ports (total 4). Depending on the price difference, ASUS may have the best option available. We have yet to find a 3DHTI version for sale, but we will keep the updates flowing.

Glenn Henry Interview - VIA Isaiah

Via was able to give their C7 Platform a boost in performance today. The normal processors found in mobile devices, such as the OQO 02, use the Centaur C7 line. VIA released their new Isaiah, which is two to four times as powerful. The major breakthrough is that they managed to do this while maintaining drop-in compatibility. This processor is twice as fast as its predecessor is, but uses the same resources. They accomplished this engineering feat by designing an entirely new architecture from scratch.
