It is official, and it is all over the web: Looks like Sun
purchases MySQL AB for $1 Billion. More here.
If you have not had enough Linux news for the day, there is
always CES. It is
doing so well, one might even say it's almost worth money... good thing it is
free, for the most part.
Although, the funniest thing on the web today probably is
not Cyanide Happiness, but instead, it is probably the fact that Linux is
whipping up on Vista when it comes to new PCs being delivered: and it looks
like we
are starting to win.
The best news for last, it looks like, while using SuSE
Enterprise Linux, this guy
thinks that AMD is far more efficient than Intel when it comes to processing...
Interesting, but more important: is this going to apply to every single person
who uses a computer, or just servers? He really does not cover it...

The One Laptop Per Child Initiative is quite
ambitious, but the OS behind it is almost as compelling. Not much has been
written about their general usability, until this.
For those with an artistic streak, there are
two articles today that will be of some interest... Lightzone 3.3 beta is a phenomenal program, with
an all-inclusive type of UI, the user still can make an elegant
HDR/Professional photo.. Looks like
someone put some time into something other than a Photoshop Tutorial.
When it comes to motion video, YouTubers are
in luck. The article sheds some light on "Elephant Dream," and the depth of
devotion it takes to make a movie completely open source. It seems like it is
getting much easier to do everything with Linux, even tasks that many consider
difficult and tedious.
IBM, one of our favorite companies,
has released Jazz
to the public. Jazz is an interesting specimen, and something that should
increase team programming efficiency. If anyone that is working on a program
changes the source in any relevant way for any user on the project, the
affected personnel are told in real-time. The alert includes what has changed
and how it has changed.
Due to its fragile nature, not everyone likes
CD/DVD media. Luckily, there is a trick to set up a network install of Linux: Here
is how. Try it, and see if you do not want to get rid of that dormant SATA
DVD drive.
Last of all, there is automating Firefox. It talks
about an interesting plug-in for Firefox that allows a user to record his or her
actions for later re-enactment. Imagine pushing one button for all online
billing sites and the script pulls them up and logs in.

Lockheed Martin has released a press release that talks
about the exclusive agreement they have come to with EEstor. EEstor are the
creators of an ultra-capacitor energy storage method. The credibility of the
claims that EEstor have made over a year ago might be legitimate. Most skeptics
will not rest until they see prototypes. However, the fact that the government
is planning on implementing this technology in almost all sectors of business
and technology is a good sign. This battery technology allows for 10 times the
energy density with a 1/10th of the weight. Read on for more
information on this interesting technology and the press release.

Linux is more popular than
many of us think, and it is gaining more mass and credibility. Lenovo is releasing ThinkPads with Linux
on them, finally. SuSE
will be the OS loaded. The company will get some much-needed coverage and an
excellent funding boost. On top of that, the user is able to save some money
better spent on hardware. This is huge, considering it is mobile and on a
high-end system: definitely, some much-needed credit is finally served.
Linux.com has something to
say about the Asus Eee PC. All around positive view of the laptop.
Children rated it highly.
If Linux is the OS of choice
for your mobile system. Linux.com has an article talking about securing Linux laptops.
Software companies making an
about-face? This woman thinks so, and her logic
is sound, but the premise? This man Disagrees and states his position.
In addition, those of you who
need to hack, look over at this: Clean up your GNOME.
"On a sad note, Gentoo has died, and by died, we mean let the
paperwork slip. Do not ever forget to pay your taxes. This is sad for me... I
loved Gentoo... it took the guesswork out of piecemeal Linux, and it will be
sorely missed... that is, if they don't get their act together and file their
paperwork." Heart ~Justin

With trends in the technology industry moving towards
an environmentally conscious attitude, it is surprising that the public does not
reflect this mentality in their purchasing habits. Alas, the American market,
both on the client end and on the server end, is not adopting the
"greener" hardware they have at their disposal.
